Barely a week has gone by and the cyclists find themselves retracing the route they took last week on their way to Felixstowe. This time they were visiting Orwell Lodge in Ipswich. The sky was a good deal cloudier and very grey, the forecast for rain along the route…Though the sky became even blacker the rain thankfully only materialized as a light drizzle and the Brothers managed to reach Ipswich still relatively dry. The dull weather and wind making the countryside seem much more Autumnal in the space of just a week, leaves blowing in the road, the colours in the trees turning from yellows to golds, reds and browns. The ride was reasonably uneventful, though there were several other cyclists out, all going faster…. The Ipswich traffic was extremely slow and the cyclists managed to pass several cars and vans that went past them a few miles back, making good time through the congestion to arrive at Soane street.
Brother Cliff Sargeant was there to greet them, A choice of coffee and biscuits or beer and crisps at the ready! Guess which the cyclists chose…The cyclists and Bro Cliff were warmly welcomed by the members of Orwell lodge and more refreshments were offered! The Lodge was opened and an excellent presentation on the Grand Charity Foundation was given by WBro Les Hambling. WBro Les Spoke specifically about the Visiting Volunteers program & their support to Lodge Almoners in obtaining MCF grants,
WBro Andy was given the opportunity to explain a little more about the cycling challenge and their progress to date. The Worshipful Master WBro Keith Gaunt then presented Bro Andy with a donation of £200 towards the festival 2019. The Festival Chairman WBro Neville Warnes was also in attendance and talked about the Festival progress.
Following the meeting the Brethren retired to the bar and after that the Festive Board which was an excellent and hearty meal. As always the Brethren met new Brothers and there was much camaraderie and enjoyable conversation. Brother Nick Moulton made the reply to the visitor’s toast.
So, thank you Orwell Lodge for your warm welcome, your support of the cyclists in their challenge and the generous donation of £200.
Thank also to WBro Cliff Sargeant for his support yet again. Not only for driving the van but going beyond that and providing food and drink on arrival!
