The first day of June was this year’s date for the annual Provincial Grand Lodge meeting. Held at the stunning Royal Hospital School, Holbrook.
And every Lodge in Suffolk would not have been visited if the cyclists had missed out the main one! So once again they set off, with yet another first, this time for the earliest start to visit a Lodge meeting, departing at 7am! The morning was a pleasant temperature but early morning mist and fog made riding lights essential and served to mist up the cyclist’s glasses….
The fresh morning air and warm temperature made for a pleasant ride to Holbrook, on a yet unexplored route, following the narrow lanes through Polstead Heath and Lower Raydon, where Sulleys Hill was the only main challenge of the journey, it being an otherwise relatively flat route. Stutton village community shop provided a convenient stop for a breakfast sandwich and coffee stop.
Shortly after that the Brothers arrived at Holbrook to be greeted once again by support driver and friend WBro Cliff Sargeant. It wasn’t long before the cyclists were working, setting out their stall to promote the cycling challenge and help sell the Festival Merchandise and Draw tickets, ably assisted by fellow stewards and members of the Suffolk Light Blues.
Following the Provincial meeting around 400 Brethren sat down to enjoy an excellent Festive board after pre-dinner drinks. The cyclists passed around a pint glass to each table, looking to garner a little extra financial support. Having visited nearly all the Suffolk Lodges most of the Brethren present had already supported the cyclists. Despite this an excellent sum of £341.86 was raised in support of their challenge and the festival.
With their target well and truly exceeded and this further donation adding to it, this is yet again a shining example of Suffolk Freemasonry and the close Brotherhood and camaraderie that exists within it!
Thank you all!
