Tuesday 23rd of May was a fine dry day for the cyclists to travel the relatively short distance to Bury St Edmunds. This time to visit Solea Lodge No 9498. The journey was very pleasant with no rain, sunshine and only a light headwind. The cyclists had opted for the heavier but more comfortable mountain style bikes and enjoyed the rolling Suffolk countryside and pleasant scenery, arriving at Ashlar house in just over an hour. This was to be their last visit to Ashlar house as part of the cycling challenge to visit all the Lodges in Suffolk, an indication that good progress was being made.
Upon arrival, the cyclists were greeted by Brother William McColl brandishing two cold beers, which were most welcome! They were greeted by members of Solea Lodge and also members of Magna Carta Lodge as well. The ceremony this evening being a second degree for a brother from Magna Carta Lodge, a testament to the camaraderie between the two Lodges.
The work was carried out in a most sincere and efficient manner by the Worshipful Master WBro Jarman and Brother Alfie Pitt was passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft, witnessed by a goodly number of brethren. The Charity Steward WBro Bob Rider announced that the raffle would be given to the cyclists in support of their challenge to raise money towards the 2019 Festival. He then invited WBro Andy to give a brief update on how the challenge was going which he did and Brother Nick also assisted informing the brethren with the up to date progress.
Following the ceremony, the Brethren all retired to the bar followed by the Festive Board. This was very good with great food and excellent company. As is always the case when visiting a Lodge, they made new friends and re-acquainted themselves with Brothers met on previous occasions. WBro Bob Rider had paid for the cyclist’s meals for which they were most grateful. The raffle raised the excellent sum of £255 which was presented to WBro Andy at the festive board.
So, thank you Solea Lodge for your warm welcome, the last of the cycling visits to Ashlar house but by no means the least, your very generous donation to the Festival and for treating the cyclists and to their supper! A very enjoyable evening.
Thanks for driving the support van and taking the cyclists back home must this time go to WBro Barry Whymark from magna Carta Lodge.
So, until next season when the challenge will recommence the cyclists will be taking a well-earned break!
